Being an Educator is the most important part of my art practice!
With over TEN years of experience teaching piano, composition, songwriting, and voice lessons to students of all ages in NYC, Sequoia is dedicated to nurturing each individual’s musical journey. Her teaching philosophy centers around a student-guided approach, emphasizing the importance of following the joy in learning. She received a Bachelor of Music in Classical Composition from Purchase Conservatory of Music and an MFA in Musical Theatre Writing from NYU Tisch (full scholarship).
Throughout her career, Sequoia has had the privilege of teaching at esteemed institutions such as TADA!, Williamsburg School of Music, Learning through Expanded Arts Programs (Leap), and Creative Arts & Music Programs (CMP). Additionally, she served as the Music Director at Brooklyn Acting Lab, a children’s theater company. She is currently a professor on in the Classical Composition Faculty at SUNY Purchase College Conservatory of Music where she teaches composition lessons, orchestration, and Purchase New Music (a collaborative ensemble class between composition students and performance majors).
In addition to her teaching roles, Sequoia organizes biannual recitals at Pete’s Candy Store in Williamsburg, providing students with a platform to showcase their talents, and having fun!!
